Market ends firm after positive monetary policy announcement; banking sector up

The markets had an extremely good day with CRR, repo nad reverse repo rates remaing unchanged in the credit policy declared. The markets opened flat and were looking for some direction from the credit policy and ended with hefty gains with large volume. With rates unchanged interest rate sensitive stocks were among the top gainers. Bank stocks led the uptrend followed by auto, metal, telecom, media and oil & gas. However, languishing at the lower levels were technology stocks due to strengthening rupee. The midcap and smallcap ended higher but did not outperform the frontliners.

The Sensex stayed above 14,100 levels and the Nifty above 4,100 mark.

Sensex closed up 208.39 points or 1.50% at 14136.72, and the Nifty up 56.70 points or 1.39% at 4141.8.

About 1237 shares have advanced, 1267 shares declined, and 75 shares are unchanged.

SBI, Tata Steel, Bharti Airtel, Zee Entertain and PNB were among the top frontline gainers.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,745.34 up 42.9 points or 0.75%.

The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 7,003.63 up 32.7 points or 0.47%.

The BSE Bankex was up 4.06% at 7,161.40. Canara Bank, Oriental Bank, Bank of India, PNB, SBI, Bank of Baroda, IOB moved upwards.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.2% at 9,794.62. Siemens, Aban Offshore, SKF India, ABB, HEG closed higher.

The BSE Health Care Index was up 0.7% at 3,766.90. Lupin, Cipla, Ranbaxy Labs, Aventis Pharma, Wyeth closed higher.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,882.03 up 1.65%. Maruti Udyog, Tata Motors, Apollo Tyres, Mah and Mah, Bajaj Auto, Cummins surged.

The BSE Metal Index closed at 10,043.87 up 1.5%. JindalStainless, Mah Seamless, Tata Steel, Welspun Guj, Sterlite Ind advanced higher.

The BSE FMCG Index gained 0.6% at 1,792.53. HLL, Dabur India, Shaw Wallace, Britannia closed higher.

BSE Oil and Gas Index closed higher at 7,203.64 up 1.4%. GAIL, Reliance, ONGC, Chennai Petro ended in green.

The BSE IT Index lost 0.7% at 5,027.29. Wipro, Satyam, HCL Tech, Infosys, TCS closed higher.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 10884.86 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 50866.94 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 5100.07 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 66851.87 crore.
