Sensex, Nifty end flat

The markets ended the day on a flat note after opening the in red. The frontline indices ended flat but the midcap index outperformed the broader markets. The turnover volumes were not very convincing but the breadth was in favour of advances.
IT stocks were among the major losers ahead of the results followed by banking. Giving strength at the lower levels were FMCG and metal stocks. HLL and ITC were the top performers. Oil stocks like HPCL, BPCL did well as crude oil prices showed weakness. Midcap stocks like SRF, LML, Indiabulls Realestate, BOI, IDFC, Prism Cement, Nagarjuna Fertilisers were among the gainers.
Capital goods, auto and bank index ended with marginal gains but IT index ended in deep red. FMCG and metal index outperformed.
Sensex closed up 11.80 points or 0.09% at 13189.54, and the Nifty up 4.65 points or 0.12% at 3848.15.
About 1544 shares have advanced, 989 shares declined, and 67 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,461.51 up 42 points or 0.77%.
The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 6,656.74 up 71 points or 1.08%.
The BSE Bankex was up 0.27% at 6,598.59. Bank of India, Federal Bank, Andhra Bank, HDFC Bank moved upwards.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.3% at 9,239.97. Crompton Greave, Praj Industries, Carborundum, Aban Offshore, BHEL closed higher.
The BSE Health Care Index was up 0.4% at 3,701.46. Sun Pharma, Ranbaxy Labs, GlaxoSmithKline, Matrix Lab, Divis Labs closed higher.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,605.70 up 0.3%. Escorts, Tata Motors, Tube Investment, Ashok Leyland, Sundaram-Clayto surged.
The BSE Metal Index closed at 9,000.01 up 1%. JSW Steel, JindalStainless, Sesa Goa, Jindal Steel, Hind Zinc
advanced higher.
The BSE FMCG Index gained 2.2% at 1,812.72. Shaw Wallace, ITC, HLL, United Spirits, Colgate closed higher.
BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 6,514.97 up 0.3%. BPCL, MRPL, IOC, HPCL ended in green.
The BSE IT Index lost 2% at 4,828.33. Satyam, Infosys, Wipro, TCS ended in red.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8432.26 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 22046.34 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4190.71 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 34669.31 crore.
