Asian indices open gap up on strong finish in US markets

Asian indices rose sharply early today, inspired by a strong finish on Wall Street, with financials such as Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group leading the advance in Tokyo, and Macquarie Bank pacing gains in Sydney. Japan's Nikkei surged 1.06% or 172.92 points at 16,421.89. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.74% or 399.83 points at 23,321.72.

Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted rose 1.15% or 99.75 points at 8,789.84.Singapore's Straits Times advanced 1.29% or 43.60 points at 3,413.05. South Korea's Seoul Composite was up 1.49% or 26.68 points at 1,818.01.
