Sterlite Optical Technologies leads gainers in 'A' group

Sterlite Optical Technologies jumped 3.87% to Rs 221.30 and topped gainers in BSE's A group shares. The company's net profit flared up 283.73% to Rs 12.74 crore on 146.54% increase in sales to Rs 239.56 crore in Q1 June 2007 over Q1 June 2006. The fiber optic cables maker declared the results on 26 July 2007.
India Cements moved up 3.85% to Rs 225.20. It stood second among top gainers in A group shares. On 30 July 2007, The company had announced merger of Visaka Cement with itself, and had announced setting up of an additional production line at its Malkapur, Maharashtra plant of Visaka Cement, which would aid in increasing the capacity from the existing 8.9 million tonnes to about 15 million tonnes at an investment of Rs 800 crore.
State Bank of India (SBI) gained 2.80% to Rs 1681.85 and came third among the top gainers in ‘A’ group. SBI today, 6 August 2007, announced a reduction as well as hikes in deposit rates based on maturities effective 9 August 2007. The bank has cut the deposit rate for one year to less than two years to 8% from 8.25%.
The bank has hiked the rate on deposits for 271 days to less than a year to 6.75% from 6.50% from the earlier time frame of 180 days to less than a year. The bank has introduced a new band - three years and up to 10 years - with an interest rate of 8.50% as against the earlier five years and above rate of 8.25%
Jammu & Kashmir Bank moved up 2.58% to Rs 683.65. It was the fourth biggest gainer in the ‘A’ group scrips. Earlier on 1 August 2007, India’s fifth largest private sector bank in terms of revenue declared that it received the central bank's nod for setting up a stockbroking subsidiary.
National Aluminium Company (Nalco) rose 2.58% to Rs 258.25 and became fifth biggest gainer among ‘A’ group of shares. On Thursday, 26 July 2007, Nalco had shut down two units of its 960-mega watts captive power plant at Angul, Orissa due to shortage of coal.
As per media reports today, 6 August 2007, Indian Railways have assured Nalco to provide additional wagon rakes for transportation of coal from Central Coalfields (CCL) and Bharat Coking Coal (BCCL) mines.
