VSNL leads gainers in 'A' group

India's eighth largest telecommunication services provider in terms of sales, Videsh Sanchar Nigam (VSNL) spurted 6.71% to Rs 407.25 and it topped the gainers in BSE’s A group shares.

India’s second largest electronic media company by sales Sun TV moved up 5.87% to Rs 330.25. It was the second biggest gainer in A group. The company through its subsidiary South Asia FM (SAFL) has acquired a 48.9% stake in Red FM with an aim to expand its FM radio broadcasting business. Red FM’s promoters would hold the remaining 51% stake.

State-run engineering firm Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) jumped 5.61% to Rs 62.10 and came third among top gainers in A group.

Small-sized auto ancillaries maker Escorts gained 5.50% to Rs 90.15. It was the fourth biggest gainer in A group. Yesterday, 29 August 2007, National Stock Exchange banned building fresh positions in the company’s derivatives contracts as the open interest crossed 95% of the position limit.

GlaxoSmithKline Pharma rose 5.35% to Rs 1184.50 and came fifth among top gainers in A group. The company, recently launched anti-cervical cancer vaccine Cervarix in Southeast Asia. The drug combats the virus that is responsible for over 70% of cervical cancer cases worldwide.
