Sensex up 561 pts at 17890; Nifty up 141 pts at 5210

Markets witnessed unprecedented volatility during the day’s trade. Sensex recorded highest intra-day volatility in 2007 (665 points), it shies away from 18000 and ended up 561 points at 17890. Nifty closed above 4200 and was up 141 points at 5210. IT stocks saw contrarian buying in which Infosys lead the gains. Realty & Power continued to gain. In this, DLF hits Rs 1.5 lakh crore market cap. BSE Realty Index was up 6.4%, BSE IT Index was up 4.15% and BSE Oil & Gas Index was up 3.4%. CNX Midcap Index was up but ended almost flat while BSE Small-cap Index was down 0.86%. NSE Advance Decline ratio stood at 4:7. Total market turnover was at Rs 1.35 lakh crore vs Rs 85984.6 crore on Monday. All time high F&O turnover was at Rs 1 lakh crore and stock futures turnover was at Rs 61000 crore.

F&O Snapshot
Huge volatility was seen in Nifty; futures swung between discount and premium. Profit booking was seen in select midcaps. DLF was up 16.5% in which huge build up of 30% in OI was seen and the turnover was of Rs 3,000 crore. NTPC was up 4%; added 12 lakh shares in OI; TTML was down 5%; sheds 80 lakh shares in OI and profit booking was seen in Arvind Mills, Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Ashok Leyland.
