Markets close in red

The markets had a disappointing close and they ended in red. The cues from global markets were not very encouraging as well as most of the Asian markets closed flat.

The markets spent most of their day langusihing around its previous close but slipped in the red during the final hour of trade. Auto, FMCG, oil & gas and banking stocks were among the major losers on the indices. However, select buying interest was seen in metal and capital good stocks. Even the midcap and smallcap indices closed in red inline with the frontline indices giving market a negative breadth.

Sensex closed down 90.46 points or 0.63% at 14363.26, and the Nifty down 31.90 points or 0.75% at 4246.2.

About 899 shares have advanced, 1613 shares declined, and 77 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 7,237.55 down 49.22 points or 0.68%.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,108.84 down 36 points or 0.6%.

The BSE FMCG Index wad up 1.2% at 1,897.41. United Spirits, ITC, Colgate, Shaw Wallace closed in red.

The BSE Metal Index was up 1% to close at 10,634.95. Tata Steel up 5.01% and Welspun Guj up 2.68% were among the gainers.

The BSE Bankex was down 1% at 7,589.51. IOB, Kotak Mahindra, Federal Bank, Bank of Baroda, Andhra Bank
moved downwards.

The BSE Health Care Index ended lower by 0.5% at 3,758.40. Nicholas Pirama, Matrix Lab, Ranbaxy Labs, Orchid Chemical, Wockhardt closed lower.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.4% at 9,038.49. SKF India, Thermax, BHEL, Crompton Greave ended higher.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,837.41 down 1.08%.Bharat Forge, Tata Motors, Punj Tractors, Exide Industrie were among the losers.

The BSE IT Index closed at 4,824.13 down 0.5%. Hexaware Tech, HCL Tech, I-Flex Solution, Patni Computer
ended weak.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 7,769.23 down 1.2%. Chennai Petro, Petronet LNG, MRPL, GAIL ended in red.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 10697.86 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 33963.21 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 5293.97 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 49955.04 crore.

* BSE Small Cap index gives up gains to end down 0.7% at 7238
* Market breadth negative; NSE Advance Decline ratio around 1:2
* Total market turnover was Rs 49,955.04 cr vs Rs 50,069.21 cr
