Quiet ending for mkts: FMCG, cons durable stocks drag

The markets opened on very strong note today on the back of positive cues from Asian peers but could not maintain its opening gains and cracked steadily in the last one hour of trade to close quiet. IT and banking stocks were in limelight today but the consumer durable and FMCG stocks remained out of focus and traded on soft note for most part of the day today and ended in red.
Sensex ended up 26.29 points or 0.18% at 14570.75, and the Nifty up 1.25 points or 0.03% at 4297.05. About 1334 shares have advanced, 1177 shares declined, and 97 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,264.28 up 41.88 points or 0.67%.
The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 7,473.87 up 60.84 points or 0.82%.
The BSE auto index closed up 17.92 points or 0.36% at 5030.20. TVS Motor, Exide Industries, MICO, Ashok Leyland and Cummins gained.
The BSE bankex ended up 75.29 points or 0.99% at 7682.64. Canara Bank, Oriental Bank, IOB, SBI and HDFC Bank closed in green.
The BSE capital goods index was up 87.77 or 0.79% at 11241.76. Bharat Elec, Gammon India, Alstom Projects, ABB, BEML and Aban Offshore gained.
The BSE healthcare index gained 10.59 points or 0.28 at 3852.43. Nicholas Piramal, Cipla, Wockhardt, Panacea Biotech and Aurobindo Pharma moved up.
The BSE IT index surged 56.95 points or 1.17% at 4908.38. Patni Computer, Moser Baer, I-Flex Solution, HCL Info and Satyam closed positive.
The BSE metal index closed up 62.18 points or 0.60% at 10468.17. Mah Seamless, Jindal Steel, NALCO, Welspun Guj and Sterlite Ind ended up.
The BSE FMCG index lost 16.85 points or 0.88% at 1890.53. Bata India, Tata Tea and P&G lost maximum in this space.
The BSE consumer durable index was down 43.96 points or 1.05% at 4151.12. Whirlpool, Titan Industries, BPL and Su - Raj Diamonds were the top loers today.
The BSE oil & gas ended down 16.11 points or 0.21% at 7779.56. Petronet LNG, GAIL, HPCL were the top losers in this sector.
Turnover today:
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 9857.06 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 26988.08 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4678.12 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 41523.26 crore.
