Key share indices were up nearly 1% today with the Sensex hitting a new lifetime high of 14816.36 led by gains in capital goods. Capital goods companies have huge order books and will continue to do well due to the positive outlook on growth in the sector. At 10:55AM, Sensex was 14812.13, up 147.87 points, or 1%.Nifty was 4355.05, up 42.30 points, or 1%. BSE Capital Goods Index, up 1%, was the top gainer among BSE sector indices. L&T and ABB were up 2% each, at Rs 2,280 and Rs 1,128 respectively. CNX Midcap Index was up 0.6% and S&P CNX 500 Index was up 0.8%. On BSE, advances led declines 2.5:1 in the mid trading session. Reliance Industries was up 1.1% at Rs 1,702 after the government extended the deadline for pricing of gas from the Krishna-Godavari D6 block to Jul 31. Bank shares also recouped losses from Monday’s session. SBI and ICICI Bank were up on foreign institutional investors’ interest in these stocks. SBI rose 1% to Rs 1,547 and ICICI Bank was up 0.5% at Rs 955. Pharmaceutical stocks extended gains as investors opted for defensive stocks due to some concerns over valuations. Ranbaxy Laboratories was up 1% at Rs 368 and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals up 1.2% at Rs 680. Hero Honda was down 0.3% at Rs 691 after the company Monday reported an 8% drop in June sales for two-wheelers at 255,200 vehicles. Shares of L&T were up 2.4% at Rs 2,290 after the Chairman and Managing Director A.M. Naik Monday commented on that the company is planning to establish separate companies to pursue. The engineering major is aiming at revenue of Rs 80 bn in five years from these businesses, and will also look at listing these ventures on exchanges.
In the mid trading session, indices were up nearly 1% mid-way through today’s session, with shares of capital goods companies extending early gains on positive outlook regarding their Apr-Jun earnings on the back of huge order book positions. The surge in bank shares also supported the market. At 1:29PM, Sensex was at 14776.56, up 112.30 points, or 0.8% from Monday’s close. Nifty was at 4347.75, up 34.00 points, or 0.8%. CNX Midcap Index and S&P CNX 500 Index were up 0.8% each. On BSE, advances led declines in the ratio of 1.4:1. Shares of telecommunication companies rose on value buying. The top Nifty gainer was VSNL, up 4% at Rs 494, followed by HLL, up 3.2% at Rs 195. Bank shares gained, led by State Bank of India, which surged 3% at Rs 1,575 after the leading state-run bank said its follow-on equity issue is likely in December, BSE Capital Goods Index and BSE Bankex were up 1% and 1.5%, respectively. L&T rose 2% at Rs 2,282 while ABB was up 1% at Rs 1,127. Pharmaceutical shares slipped on profit sales. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries was down 1% at Rs 1,030. Shares of information technology companies were weak as the strong rupee against the dollar dents their export earnings. TCS fell 0.5% at Rs 1,129, while HCL Technologies shed 1% at Rs 334.
Sensex and Nifty ended at record closing highs today, rising 1% from Monday, as investors lapped up shares of banks, telecommunication, and capital goods companies. Trade was steady as the Sensex set a new-lifetime high during the first half hour of trade while the Nifty breached its previous peak during the last half hour of the session. Strong rallies in European and other Asian markets during the day also kept sentiment buoyant here. Energy and metal shares were the biggest gainers there as crude oil and metal prices surged. Sensex ended at a record high 14806.51, up 142.25 points, or 1%, from Monday, after touching a lifetime high of 14828.39 intraday. Nifty ended at record close of 4357.55, up 43.80 points, or 1%. It had touched the highest-ever level of 4363.35 earlier in the session. CNX Midcap Index was 0.7% and S&P CNX 500 Index up 1%. The biggest Nifty gainers were VSNL, up 4.8% at Rs 497, Bharti Airtel, up 3.5% at Rs 8667, and SBI, up 3.3% at Rs 1,582.
Tech stocks ended up with exception. Infosys was up at Rs 1947.40 with volumes of Rs 136.80 crs, Moser Baer was up at Rs 500.15 with volumes of Rs 101.59 crs, TCS was down at Rs 1127.60 with volumes of Rs 51.67 crs, and Satyam closed up at Rs 473.10 with volumes of Rs 43.09 crs.
Pharma stocks witnessed positive trend. Cipla Pharma was up at Rs 213.75 with volumes of Rs 76.23 crs, Orchid Chemical closed up at Rs 365.30 with volumes of Rs 21.20 crs, Ranbaxy was up at Rs 365.30 with volumes of Rs 21.20 crs, and Dr Reddy closed up at Rs 667.65 with volumes of Rs 17.55 crs.
Banking stocks showed buying opportunity. In the Public Sector banks SBI closed up at Rs 1581.85 with volumes Rs 351.52 crs & PNB closed up at Rs 542.95 with volumes Rs 48.13 crs. In the private sector ICICI Bank closed up at Rs 966.70 with volume of Rs 142.29 crs & HDFC Bank closed up at Rs 1150.50 with volumes of Rs 47.73 crs.
Auto Stocks witnessed mixed trend. Tata Motors closed up at Rs 685.85 with volumes of Rs.123.97 crs & M&M closed up at Rs 735.70 with volumes of Rs 49.68 crs. While in the 2 wheeler segment stocks, Bajaj Auto closed down at Rs 2100.60 with volumes of Rs 27.48 crs & Hero Honda closed down at Rs 689.25 with volumes of Rs 7.13 crs.
Cement Stocks witnessed positivity with exception. ACC closed up at Rs 940.35 with volumes of Rs 63.16 crs, GACL closed up at Rs 124.75 with volumes of Rs 36.54 crs, India Cement closed down at Rs 207.50 with volumes of Rs 28.99 crs and Prism Cement closed up at Rs 43.15 with volumes of Rs 15.83 crs.
Nifty ended at 4358 up by 44 points.
